The problem with conventional marking underground and in heavy plant

Abrasive dust acts like sandpaper under tyres and tracks. Paint goes in a season. Tape does not survive at all — it fills with grit at the edges, lifts, and becomes a hazard in its own right. Damp and water ingress prevent coatings from bonding to begin with, and surfaces are often uneven rock or aged concrete that no adhesive product was designed for.

The result is that the areas most in need of clear traffic separation are the ones where marking is least likely to survive.

Why projection suits these environments

Light does not abrade. A projected marking is unaffected by dust on the floor, water on the floor, or the floor being an uneven surface that no tape would stick to. Nothing is consumed, so nothing needs reapplying on a maintenance schedule.

The projector itself is the only thing exposed, which is why the specification matters more here than anywhere else.

What to specify

• Fanless, passively cooled. A fan in a dusty environment is a filter that eventually blocks, then a failure. No moving parts means no dust ingress path.
• IP65 sealed against dust and water jets
• UL/cUL certified — available on the 60W and above
• Higher wattage for long throw and poor ambient contrast — 150W and 300W units project usefully at height and in dim conditions
• Rugged housing rated for wide temperature swings

Typical applications

Vehicle and pedestrian separation in haulage ways, stop and yield markings at underground intersections, keep-clear zones around equipment, crush and pinch hazard warnings, and overhead hazard marking where a fixed sign would be out of the line of sight.

Sensor-triggered options

Where traffic is intermittent, our Smart Systems use directional sensors to project a warning only when a vehicle actually approaches — which keeps the warning meaningful rather than becoming part of the scenery.
