Outdoors, painted markings face weather, road salt and traffic at the same time.
Why outdoor marking is the hardest case
Yard and dock markings take vehicle traffic, freeze-thaw cycling, standing water, road salt and UV. Paint chalks and lifts. Thermoplastic cracks. Anything adhesive is out of the question on a surface that is wet or contaminated for much of the year. And in a yard the marking is often needed most at night, when a painted line is close to invisible.
Why projection changes the equation outdoors
A projected sign is at its brightest and most useful exactly when a painted one disappears — after dark, in rain, on a wet surface that is reflecting rather than absorbing. Nothing on the ground means nothing for a snow plough to scrape away.
What to specify for outdoor use
- IP65 sealed and rated for outdoor exposure — the exterior and PCE ranges are built for it
- Fanless passive cooling, so there is no air path for water or debris
- Higher wattage. Ambient light is the limiting factor outdoors, not distance. Plan on 150W or 300W for anything used in daylight, and expect the usable image to be smaller in bright conditions than in dark.
- UL/cUL certification for wet-location installation
- Realistic expectations: projection is exceptional at dusk, at night and in overcast conditions, and works but with a smaller image in direct sun.
Typical applications
Yard traffic control and speed markings, pedestrian routes across vehicle compounds, dock approach and reversing warnings, gatehouse stop points, and no-entry marking on temporary or seasonal restrictions.
Vehicle-triggered options
Our Smart Dock system detects a truck breaking the plane of a doorway and triggers a no-pedestrian projection on the floor inside — designed for exactly the dock-door exposure that outdoor and indoor traffic share.
