What a projected safety sign actually is
A projected safety sign is a focused LED luminaire that throws a fixed image onto a floor, wall or piece of equipment. The image is cut into a glass disc — a gobo — that sits in the optical path, so the projector does not display video and needs no controller, no network and no media player. Switch it on and the image is there, sharp, at the size and position you aimed it.
It exists because paint and tape are consumables and floors are hostile. A painted crosswalk in a distribution centre lasts as long as the forklift traffic lets it. Tape lifts at the edges, collects grease, and fails outright below freezing. Every time either one wears out you are shutting down an aisle, masking, curing and re-opening. A projected sign is mounted overhead, out of the traffic path, and the floor underneath it is never touched.
The second reason is that layouts change and paint does not. When a racking run moves, a projected sign is loosened, re-aimed and re-tightened in a few minutes. Paint has to be ground off.
Which projector do I need?
Three things decide it, in this order: how bright the space is, how high you can mount, and how big the image needs to be on the floor. Everything else is secondary.
Ambient light is the one people get wrong. A projected image competes with whatever else is landing on that floor. A dim warehouse aisle at 100–200 lux needs far less output than a dock door with daylight coming in at 2,000 lux or more. Under-specify and you get a washed-out ghost; over-specify and you have paid for output you cannot see.
Mounting height and image size are linked by the lens. Higher mounting means a bigger image and a dimmer one — the same light spread over more floor. Doubling the throw distance quarters the brightness on the floor. In practice most installations sit between 10 and 25 feet, and the honest answer is that the projector and the lens should be picked together against your actual ceiling.

Complete systems vs. building it yourself
A working installation is a projector, a gobo, and a mount. Buying them separately is fine if you already know the specification. If you do not, a SpectroSIGN™ complete system pairs a projector with the correct gobo for the sign you actually want, so there is nothing left to get wrong.
The most commonly specified are the traffic-control designs, because they go where vehicles and people meet:

The other family is keep-clear marking, which is where most housekeeping violations actually happen:
A panel that is blocked by a pallet is a finding on any walkthrough. The difference a projected keep-clear zone makes is that the boundary is visible from across the building and it cannot be scuffed away.
Gobos — the part that decides what the sign says
The gobo is a glass disc, not a film or a gel. That matters for life expectancy: glass in a fanless fixture with no moving parts is the reason a projected sign is a fit-and-forget device rather than a maintenance item.
Gobos are priced by how many colours are in the design, because each colour is a separate layer in the glass. A single-colour white or monochrome design is the cheapest; three-colour designs cost the most. If you have artwork of your own — a plant standard, a bilingual sign, a company mark — it can be cut as a custom gobo in anything from black and white through to full colour.
Two practical notes. First, a gobo only emits the coloured areas. Anything that would be black ink on a printed sign is simply absent, and the floor stays dark there. A yellow CAUTION plate projects as a yellow field with the lettering knocked out, which is exactly how it should look. Second, bilingual and French-language requirements are a custom gobo question, not a catalogue question — if you are marking a site in Quebec, talk to us before ordering standard artwork.
Virtual walkways
A virtual walkway is a projected line, or a pair of lines, defining a pedestrian route across a floor that vehicles also use. It is the single most requested application after STOP signs, and the reason is maintenance: a painted or taped walkway in a live traffic aisle is the marking that fails first, because it is the marking that gets driven over most.
The ECO Lines family covers this — straight runs, corners, and directional arrows — and the same logic about ambient light and mounting height applies. Lines are usually specified in green for pedestrian routes and yellow for boundaries and hazard edges, but the colour is a property of the gobo, so a site standard can be matched.

Does a projected sign satisfy a signage requirement?
This is the question every buyer asks and the one nobody in this category answers honestly, so here is a straight answer.
Treat a projected sign as a supplement to required permanent signage, not a replacement for it, unless you have confirmed otherwise for your own jurisdiction and your own hazard. The reasoning is simple and it is about failure modes: a projected sign depends on power. Permanent signage does not. Where a standard or a regulation requires a sign to be present, the safe reading is that it must be present when the power is off.
Where projected signs are genuinely strong is everywhere the requirement is to communicate a hazard or a rule effectively rather than to display a specific permanent placard: traffic control inside a facility, keep-clear zones, pedestrian routes, dynamic areas that change with the layout, and anywhere a permanent sign would be destroyed or obscured. In those roles a projected sign frequently outperforms paint, because it is bright, it is in the walking surface where people are already looking, and it does not degrade.
Requirements differ between Canadian and US sites, and between provinces. We are building out a detailed standards reference for exactly this question. Until it is published with verified clause citations, we would rather tell you plainly that it is being written than give you a number we have not checked. Where these hold up — and where they do not
Some environments are the reason this product category exists. Others are a poor fit, and it is cheaper for both of us to say so up front.
- Cold storage and freezer warehouses — the strongest case. Adhesives fail below freezing and paint will not cure. There is nothing on the floor to fail.
- Mining and heavy industry — dust, damp and abrasion destroy floor marking. An overhead fixture is out of the abrasion path entirely.
- Distribution centres and warehouses — where the layout changes on a seasonal cycle and re-marking is a recurring cost.
- Outdoor yards, docks and vehicle compounds — workable, but this is where ambient light does the most damage to a specification. Daylight is the constraint, and these positions usually need the higher-output fixtures.
The honest limitations: a projected sign needs a mounting position with a clear line of sight to the floor, which racking and mezzanines can take away. It needs power at that position. In full direct sunlight, a floor image will lose the argument no matter what you spend. And the image is on the floor, so anything parked on that spot hides it — which is a feature for keep-clear marking and a problem for anything else.
Sensor-triggered and engineered systems
A sign that is always on is not always the right answer. Where you want the message to appear only when it matters — a warning that triggers when a vehicle approaches, or an interlock tied to a door or a machine state — that is a SpectroSIGN™ Smart System: the same projector with motion, presence or equipment sensing in front of it.
These are engineered and quoted rather than picked off a shelf, because the sensing choice depends on approach speed, mounting geometry and what the trigger has to be wired into. Recent builds of this type have been supplied into automotive and packaging plants.
Twelve years at a Magna plant, and nobody has touched them
The most useful durability data we have is not a spec sheet. It is an installation at a Magna automotive facility in Ontario that has been running for twelve years, with more than ten units still operational. We visit annually to check them. In twelve years they have needed no service.
Some of the units have spider webs across the housings. That is the most persuasive maintenance claim we can make, because it means nobody has been near them — no cleaning, no re-lamping, no re-aiming, no calls.
The engineering reason is boring and it is the whole point: LED source, no moving parts, no fan, glass optics, sealed housing. There is nothing in the fixture that wears. The projectors we supply are UL/cUL certified by the manufacturer under their own file number, and the sealed models carry an IP65 rating. We are careful with that language — the certification belongs to the projector, and we will not describe a system as certified when it is the fixture inside it that holds the listing.
What it costs to be wrong, and how to avoid it
The failure mode in this category is almost never the hardware. It is a specification that did not account for ambient light or mounting height, producing an image that is technically present and practically invisible. That is an expensive way to learn a lesson, and it is avoidable in one email.
