We were building LED-powered projected signs before this category had a name. Our earliest installation is still running today — more than twelve years of continuous operation, in a working automotive plant, with no service calls and no parts replaced. When we visit, the only maintenance it has ever needed is a broom.
That is the real argument for projection. Painted lines get scuffed away by forklift traffic. Tape lifts, curls and has to be replaced. Adhesive floor signs fail under washdown. A projected sign never touches the floor, so there is nothing to wear out — and when your layout changes, you move the projector instead of repainting the plant.
